Patented Orca Live Wireless RF™ digital radio and digital power amplifier (DPA) technology provides ultra-low power consumption to extend the battery life of IoT devices connecting over all major IoT standards.

Silicon-proven Orca Live Wireless RF™ digital transceivers are available to select customers as IP cores, known good die (KGD) and packaged integrated circuits (ICs). IP cores are optimized for integration into standard CMOS system on chip (SoC) devices for the lowest cost, smallest silicon area and lowest power IoT SoC products.

Orca Systems is headquartered in San Diego, California with an exceptional research and development center and state-of the art lab facility in Bangalore, India.

TECHNOLOGY

Demanding IoT
Only groundbreaking, patented Orca Live Wireless RF™ digital transceivers are capable of meeting the demands of IoT for all major standards.

The exploding IoT market places tremendous demands on RF transceivers. The majority of the billions of new things connecting to the internet will be small, battery powered devices. Dramatic improvements to power efficiency, silicon area and simplicity of RF integration in SoCs are the most critical requirements for winning RF IoT solutions.

RF transceivers are typically the leading contributor to IoT power consumption. High average and peak power consumption degrade IoT battery longevity in significant ways:

  • Increase battery drain
  • Decrease accessible battery capacity
  • Increase device temperature, creating energy loss

Orca Live Wireless RF™ digital transceivers leverage the natural benefits of digital design to enable the future of IoT connectivity: small, inexpensive devices offering years of battery powered connectivity.

The Digital Difference
The benefits of Orca Live Wireless RF™ digital transceivers for our customers are significant: lowest power and smallest IoT solutions that cost less to design and manufacture

Digital RF technology has long been pursued because of its known ability to deliver substantial improvements to:

  • Power efficiency and power consumption
  • Silicon footprint
  • IC integration
  • Development costs
  • Design reuse
  • Design portability to alternate foundries and lower geometries
  • Variation across Process, Voltage and Temperature (PVT)
  • Solution flexibility (e.g. multi-mode, multi-band)
  • Noise immunity
  • Calibration

Digital RF will further separate itself from legacy analog RF in the future as it benefits from the exponential improvements of Moore’s Law.

Legacy analog approaches to RF are inefficient, costly to design and implement, not portable between foundries, challenging to fabricate at lower geometries and more difficult to integrate with other circuits; along with a host of other drawbacks.

Some of the world’s preeminent RF companies have attempted to commercialize digital RF to realize the benefits of ultra-low power, low cost, small size and easy integration into system-on-chip (SoC) devices.

Digital Breakthrough
Only silicon-proven Orca Live Wireless RF™ successfully delivers the benefits of digital RF for all major IoT standards.

Digital RF transceiver design is fundamentally different than legacy analog RF design and requires a fundamentally different corporate skillset. RF transceiver incumbents do not have the expertise to move from analog to digital and also face organizational inertia investing in an unknown, fundamentally new approach to established product lines.

Orca Systems was founded as digital RF company in 2006. Digital RF is a core competency and Orca leverages its unique born-digital approach to solve the most difficult challenges of making digital RF a reality.

Orca Live Wireless RF™ digital architectures substantially improve the transceiver’s three core components:

Transmitter &
Power Amplifier

  • Digital switched mode power amplifier (DPA)
  • Digital single point wideband polar modulation
  • Digital open loop modulation
  • Digital multi-band phase lock loop (PLL)
  • Digital calibration of DPA

Synthesizer

  • All-digital phase lock loop (ADPLL)
  • Digitally controlled oscillator (DCO)
  • Digital open loop frequency synthesis (DOLFS) supporting wideband digital phase modulation
  • Digitally controlled crystal oscillator (DCXO)
  • Digital calibration of DCO and ADPLL

Receiver

  • Digital discrete time receiver
Orca will be the first company in the world to demonstrate a low-power digital Wi-Fi transceiver delivering wide bandwidths of 20MHz and 40Mhz!
